The musical instrument, the sistrum, dates back to Pharaonic times and is linked to Hathor. Hathor was a major ancient Egyptian goddess of love, joy, music, beauty, fertility, and motherhood, often depicted as a cow or a woman with cow ears and horns. She is also known for her easily recognisable wig.
This sistrum, with its handle depicting the face of Hathor, was used primarily in religious ceremonies. It was shaken to call upon deities and ward off evil forces. Today it is still used in some of the Coptic and Ethiopian church services.
